Ports Struggle Against Grizzlies, Head to Inland Empire for First Time This Season

The Stockton Ports struggled against the Fresno Grizzlies this past week, dropping five out the six games at Banner Island Ballpark. Stockton will look to get back in the swing of things this week taking on the Inland Empire 66ers starting tomorrow, Tuesday, May 21st with first pitch slated for 6:35 PM.

PREVIOUS GAMES AGAINST GRIZZLIES

  • Tuesday, May 14: The Ports tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on Tuesday with a two-run rally, but a solo home run in the top of the ninth for Fresno put them ahead for good in a 3-2 win in game one of a six-game set.
  • Wednesday, May 15 -  The Ports offense exploded for four runs in the first on Wednesday night, but Fresno slowly chipped away and took the lead in the seventh for a 7-5 win in game two of the six-game series.
  • Thursday, May 16 -   The Stockton Ports (14-20) struck early and often on Thursday night, pummeling the Fresno Grizzlies (19-16) by a score of 13-1 to take game three of the six-game series.
  • Friday, May 17 - A ninth-inning rally for the Fresno Grizzlies (20-16) on three infield singles gave them a 4-2 win on Friday night to take a three-games-to-one series lead over the Stockton Ports (14-21).
  • Saturday, May 18 -  For the second game in a row, the Ports (14-22) were stuck on two runs after scoring early, as the Grizzlies (21-16) won 5-2 to take game five of the six-game series.
  • Sunday, May 19 -  The Fresno Grizzlies claimed the finale of the six-game series at Banner Island Ballpark with a 9-4 win over the Ports on Sunday.


SERIES PREVIEW vs. INLAND EMPIRE 66ERS

The Ports hit the road this week to Inland Empire to take on the 66ers for the first time this season (Los Angeles Angels Single-A affiliate) this week starting on Tuesday, May 21st through Sunday, May 26th.

Following their six-game series against the 66ers, the Ports head back to Banner Island Ballpark to take on the Modesto Nuts, the beginning of a 12-game homestand.


LAST TIME OUT

  • Stockton last played the 66ers in July of 2023 where Inland Empire swept the Ports in a three-game series
  • All three games were decided by three runs or fewer
  • Inland Empire took the 2023 season series 8-1


MANN UP

  • Luke Mann is coming off a hot week at the plate where he went 9-24 this past series against the Fresno Grizzlies including a 5-5 performance last Thursday, a multi-home run game and six RBI
  • Mann was named the Cal League Player of the Week for the week of May 14th-May 19th


IN THE ZONE: Casey Yamauchi

  • Since April 24th, Yamauchi has been a constant in the Ports lineup, raising his batting average from .167 to .308.
  • In his last 22 games, the infielder has hit .320 with seven RBI, four doubles, and a triple.
  • Prior to a 0-2 performance on Sunday against the Grizzlies, Yamauchi had a 19 game on-base streak which is the longest by a Ports player all season



STANDINGS CHECK

  • Stockton is 14-23 (4th) in the Cal League North, coming off a tough series loss against the Fresno Grizzlies losing five out of six
  • Rancho Cucamonga leads the Cal League South (22-15)
  • Inland Empire is 4th (13-25) in the Cal League South and 8th in the entire Cal League
  • Modesto leads the Cal League North (24-13)
  • Both the Fresno Grizzlies and San Jose Giants won five out of their last six games, cutting the Modesto Nuts lead in the standings. Fresno now sits just 2.5 GB with San Jose just 3.5 GB
