On Deck vs. Rancho Cucamonga Quakes Banner Island Ballpark Tuesday, August 29nd - Sunday, September 3rd // Times vary Following their six game series against the Grizzlies, the Ports head back home for their final home series of the 2023 season to take on the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. Stockton is 2-4 against Rancho Cucamonga this year.
AGAINST THE GRIZZLIES The Ports travel to take on the Fresno Grizzlies this week, the final time these two meet for the season. The Ports are 10-15 against the Grizzlies this season, including 6-6 record at Chukchansi Park.
WHO'S HOT WILL SIMPSON, INF: Since joining the Ports on August 8, Simpson is batting .297 (11-for-37) with 3 2B, 2 HR and 6 RBI in 8 games. He is slugging .541 with an .866 OPS during that time. JONAH COX, OF: Over his last 8 games, Cox is 10-for-29 (.345) with a home run and 4 RBI. The A’s 6th-round pick out of Oral Roberts also has 7 SB during that time while scoring four runs. COOPER UHL, C: With a two-hit performance on Friday night, Uhl is batting .353 over his last 6 games.
PORTS MASTERING ART OF BASE-THIEVERY: Over their last six games, the Ports have been both aggressive and successful on the basepaths. Stockton has been successful in 13 of its last 15 attempts on the basepaths, and the Ports’ 13 SB during that time is second most in the California League, four behind the Inland Empire 66ers. Jonah Cox has led the way for Stockton recently with 7 SB during that time. In the month of August, the Ports are 27-for-31 in stolen base attempts, with their 27 SB ranking tied for second in the circuit with the San Jose Giants, 18 behind the 66ers. The Ports have been caught stealing just three times since August 3, going 23-for-27 over their last 14 games. Stockton’s three caught stealings is tied for the lowest number in the Cal League during that time. Cox has played a big role in the Ports’ success on the basepaths going 7-for-7 since his arrival, including 6-for-6 in Stockton’s series against the Giants.
STOCKTON ARMS GETTING IT DONE RECENTLY: The Ports have been throwing the ball well over their last eight games since August 10. During that time, Stockton’s ERA of 3.63 is tops in the league, 0.06 ahead of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (3.69). Only three teams in the Cal League have an ERA under 4.00 during that time, with the other being the Inland Empire 66ers. During that time, however, the Ports have allowed a league-high 12 unearned runs thanks to 10 errors committed during that stretch.
FLAMETHROWER MILLER REHABBING IN STOCKTON: Oakland A’s right-hander Mason Miller began a scheduled two-game rehab stint with the Ports with a two-inning scoreless start against the San Jose Giants on Tuesday. Miller did not allow a hit and struck out two over his two innings while touching 101 MPH with his fastball and is scheduled to pitch again on Sunday in the series finale. The right-hander made quite an impression on the baseball world with a four-start stretch in the big leagues in late April and early May, going 0-2 with a 3.38 ERA while racking up 22 K in 21.1 IP. Major-league opponents batted just .187 against him.
BULLPEN STRUGGLES: While the Ports’ bullpen has been performing much better of late, Stockton still ranks at or near the bottom of the league in several categories. The Ports’ relief unit has an ERA of 5.69, a WHIP of 1.59, and an opponents batting average of .272. Stockton’s ERA and batting average against are the highest marks in the league among bullpens, while their WHIP ranks 7th behind the Visalia Rawhide (1.63), who are one spot ahead of the Ports in bullpen ERA (5.49) and BAA (.263). Ports relievers have also allowed a league-high 62 home runs.
