Ports Snag Two from Modesto, Host San Jose Giants to Continue Homestand

The Ports came back on Sunday night, overcoming a six run deficit and scoring nine unanswered runs to tally their second win of the series against the Nuts. Stockton will continue their 12-game homestand at Banner Island Ballpark welcoming in the San Jose Giants starting tomorrow, August 15th with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.

PREVIOUS GAMES AGAINST MODESTO NUTS

  • Tuesday, August 8th-  After jumping out to an early two run lead the Stockton Ports were unable to recover from an inside the park home run and fell to the Modesto Nuts 7-5 on Tuesday night.
  • Wednesday, August 9th -  The Modesto Nuts jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and never looked back, defeating the Stockton Ports 20-2 on Wednesday night.
  • Thursday, August 10th -  The Stockton Ports snapped a two-game skid behind a six-run bottom of the first inning and strong start from right hander Luis Carrasco to defeat the Modesto Nuts 7-3 on Thursday night at Banner Island Ballpark.
  • Friday, August 11th - The Stockton Ports struggled at the plate against Modesto Nuts starter Tyler Cleveland and were shutout in a 5-0 defeat.
  • Saturday, August 12th - Lazaro Montes hit two home runs and Luis Suisbel added a homer of his own as the Modesto Nuts shut out the Stockton Ports 9-0 on Saturday night at Banner Island Ballpark.
  • Sunday, August 13th -   Will Simpson hit his first home run as part of a six-run fifth inning and the Stockton Ports overcame a 6-0 deficit to stun the Modesto Nuts 9-6 on Sunday night at Banner Island Ballpark.

TOP PERFORMERS

  • Will Simpson: Simpson had a strong start to his Ports career going 6-19 in five games played this week, including his first career home run Sunday night in the Ports 9-6 win over the Nuts.
  • Dereck Salom - Salom continues to be one of the constants in the Ports lineup going 7-19 this past week with a .455 on-base percentage.
  • Micah Dallas- Dallas was strong out of the bullpen this week hauling five innings pitched without giving up a run with four strikeouts

Following their six game series against the Giants, the Ports travel to take on the Fresno Grizzlies. The Ports are 10-15 against the Grizzlies this season.


AGAINST THE GIANTS

The Ports have arguably played their best baseball against the Cal League Northern Division First Half Winners this season. Despite losing their last series against the Giants at Excite Ballpark (1-5), two of the Ports four series wins have come against San Jose with both being at Banner Island Ballpark. They are 9-9 against San Jose this season.


WHO'S HOT:

GARRETT IRVIN, P: Irvin has found his role out of the bullpen, being promoted to more high leverage situations. Over his last 19.1 innings pitched (eight games), Irvin has an astonishing 0.93 ERA allowing just two runs over the span while striking out 22 batters. Irvin has a 3.01 ERA this season.

COOPER UHL, C: Uhl has been an on-base machine over his last 11 games, combining a .333 (11-for-33) batting average with 9 BB for a .489 OBP. Uhl is hitting .311 this season.

DERECK SALOM, INF: Salom put together a solid series against Modesto, leading the Ports with a .368 batting average (7-for-19).



ANCHORS IN THE PEN: Despite season long struggles in the bullpen, the Ports have found stability as of late with Dallas Woolfolk, Garrett Irvin, and Blaze Pontes. The trio has a combined 1.37 ERA since July 13th with runs coming at a premium for the Ports haulers. Irvin flaunts a 0.93 ERA in eight games with Woolfolk (1.54) and Pontes (2.16) both with a sub 2.50 ERA. Opponents are hitting just .180 against the trio since July 13th.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

-Lawrence Butler Makes MLB Debut-

Former Port Lawrence Butler made his major league debut last Friday night on August 11th for the Oakland A's.


Butler would go 0-4 on the night but despite going hitless, he was joyful in making his debut just two seasons after appearing in Stockton.


"That's a special moment because as a kid you dream of this moment for your whole life,” Butler said. “This is what you're working towards. For this to come to fruition is kind of crazy."


Butler has enjoyed a star-studded season between Double-A Midland and Triple-A Las Vegas with a .284 average, 15 home runs, and 70 RBIs in 89 games.


He is now the fifth Port from the 2021 season to make his major league debut and the seventh overall this season.
