On Deck @ Visalia Rawhide Valley Strong Ballpark Tuesday, August 1st - Sunday, August 6th // Times vary Following their six game series against the Storm, the Ports head back on the road to take on the Visalia Rawhide. The Ports lost their home series against the Rawhide back in April with Visalia taking five out of the six games against the Ports.
NEW-LOOK PORTS LINEUP: The Ports’ position player group got a mini overhaul July 7 when stalwarts OF Colby Thomas and INF Brennan Milone were promoted to High-A Lansing, and the movement continued last Friday when INF T.J. Schofield-Sam was also promoted to the Lugnuts.
The trio of Thomas, Milone and Schofield-Sam have the most plate appearances for the Ports in 2023. At the time of their promotions, Thomas led the club in games played, 2B, RBI, extra base hits and total bases, and Milone in batting average, walks, HR, OBP, SLG and OPS. Schofield-Sam has been a staple in Stockton since 2021, playing in 284 games in a Ports uniform over the last three seasons. He led the Ports in hits in each of the last two seasons.
On the mound, right-hander Pedro Santos also received a well-deserved promotion to High-A Lansing. Santos has been the Ports’ best reliever in 2023, compiling a 2-2 record with a 2.73 ERA with 6 saves over 24 appearances. The right-hander has been dominant recently, allowing just one run on nine hits in his last 13 appearances since May 19, good for a 0.55 ERA during that time.
To fill the roster spots, OF Brayan Buelvas returns to Stockton and INF Yeniel Laboy was promoted from the Arizona Complex League to make his full-season debut. In 39 games with the Ports this season, Buelvas is batting .259 with 5 HR and 20 RBIs. Laboy, the A’s 7thround pick in 2022 out of the Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy in Puerto Rico, was batting .298 with 12 RBIs in 19 games at the ACL at the time of his promotion.
INF/OF Robert Puason also makes his return to the Ports this week and INF Elvis Rijo was also added to the roster on July 16. Only July 21, the Ports added RHP Tzu-Chen Sha while RHP Dheygler Gimenez was released.
HOME SWEET HOME: Since an 0-8 start at home, the Ports have been playing much better ball at Banner Island Ballpark. Overall the Ports are now 16-26 at home, meaning they have played nearly .500 ball at 16-18 since their eighth straight loss at home to open the season on April 22, a 7-2 setback against the Rawhide at Banner Island.
NO FIREWORKS IN JULY: Offenses have heated up all around the California League in the month of July, and despite a better mark than their season average, the Ports are bringing up the rear with a .235 team batting average since the calendar turned. Stockton also has a league-low .322 OBP and .335 SLG (.657 OPS). The Ports’ league-low marks in OBP and SLG trail the field by at least 10 points, with the SLG trailing the next lowest by 50 points (Quakes - .385). There are six teams batting at least .254 in July, with the Lake Elsinore Storm leading the way with a .306 team batting average.
BULLPEN STRUGGLES: The Ports’ relief unit has an ERA of 6.19, a WHIP of 1.65, and an opponents batting average of .275. Stockton’s ERA and batting average against are the highest marks in the league among bullpens, while their WHIP ranks 7th behind the Visalia Rawhide, who are behind the Ports in bullpen ERA (5.81) and BAA (.272). Stockton’s relievers have been rock solid, however, over their last three games, not allowing an earned run over 16.1 IP. it, which belongs to Visalia, owns a 5.77 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and .270 batting average against.
About the Storm - 12-12 in second half
- 2nd in Cal League South
- Tyler Robertson leads the team with a .314 AVG
