On Deck vs. Lake Elsinore Storm Banner Island Ballpark Tuesday, July 25th - Sunday, July 30th // Times vary Following their six game series against the Giants, the Ports head back home to take on the Lake Elsinore Storm for the Storm's lone trip to Stockton this season. The Ports split the series the last time these two teams met at The Diamond
NEW LOOK PORTS LINEUP: The Ports’ position player group got a mini overhaul last week when stalwarts OF Colby Thomas and INF Brennan Milone were promoted to High-A Lansing, and the move-ment continued Friday when INF T.J. Schofield-Sam was also promot-ed to the Lugnuts. The trio of Thomas, Milone and Schofield-Sam have the most plate appearances for the Ports in 2023. At the time of their promotions,Thomas led the club in games played, 2B, RBI, extra base hits and total bases, and Milone in batting average, walks, HR, OBP, SLG and OPS. Schofield-Sam has been a staple in Stockton since 2021, playing in 284 games in a Ports uniform over the last three seasons. He led the Ports in hits in each of the last two seasons. On the mound, right-hander Pedro Santos also received a well-de-served promotion to High-A Lansing. Santos has been the Ports’ best reliever in 2023, compiling a 2-2 record with a 2.73 ERA with 6 saves over 24 appearances. The right-hander has been dominant recently, allowing just one run on nine hits in his last 13 appearances since May 19, good for a 0.55 ERA during that time. To fill the roster spots, OF Brayan Buelvas returns to Stockton andINF Yeniel Laboy was promoted from the Arizona Complex League to make his full-season debut. In 39 games with the Ports this season,Buelvas is batting .259 with 5 HR and 20 RBIs. Laboy, the A’s 7th-round pick in 2022 out of the Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy in Puerto Rico, was batting .298 with 12 RBIs in 19 games at the ACL at the time of his promotion.
HOME SWEET HOME: Since an 0-8 start at home, the Ports have been playing much better ball at Banner Island Ballpark. Overall the Ports are now 16-26 at home, meaning they have played nearly .500 ball at 16-18 since their eighth straight loss at home to open the season on April 22, a 7-2 setback against the Rawhide at Banner Island.
YOU THROW THE BALL, YOU CATCH THE BALL: Since May 23, the Ports have seen a marked improvement in their team defense. After making a season-high seven errors in their game against the Giants on May 22 at Banner Island Ballpark (a game the Ports won 12-10 on a Brayan Buelvas walk-off home run), Stockton has the third-best fielding percentage in the league at .973 behind just the Inland Empire 66ers and the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. In their last 44 games the Ports have committed just 44 errors and have turned 37 double plays. The Ports committed 71 errors in their first 39 games this season (.951).
BULLPEN STRUGGLES: So far this season, the Ports’ bullpen has been inconsistent when it comes to holding leads. The Ports’ are 17-for-39 in save opportunities and their 22 blown saves is most in the league, five more than the Modesto Nuts, who have 16 on the season. The Ports’ bullpen has an ERA of 6.49, a WHIP of 1.68, and an op-ponents batting average of .277. All three marks are highest in the league with the next-highest reliever unit, which belongs to Visalia, owns a 5.77 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and .270 batting average against. |
