Ports Grab Series Win Against Modesto Heading into Break, Welcome 66ers Starting Friday, July 14th

The Ports were able to overcome Modesto's dominance between the two teams this past week and earn them their first series win against the Nuts taking four out of the six games at John Thurman Field and tally Stockton's fourth series win of the season. Stockton is now 4-7-2 in series heading into the break and take on the Inland Empire 66ers this weekend starting Friday, July 14th with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM.

PREVIOUS GAMES AGAINST MODESTO NUTS

  • Tuesday, July 4 - The Stockton Ports hit the road one final time before the All-Star break, beginning a six-games series on Independence Day against the Modesto Nuts. In front of a packed crowd ready to celebrate with fireworks after the game, the Nuts made sure those fans saw plenty of action on the field. Ports pitching came close to escaping danger on several accounts but couldn’t keep runs off the board with two outs, leading to an 8-3 defeat in game one of the series.
  • Wednesday, July 5 -   Things have not gone according to plan for Stockton Ports when they trail late in ballgames this season. To be fair, it rarely does for teams, but for the 2023 Ports, they entered Wednesday night’s game winless in 39 games when trailing after eight innings. That streak came to an end in game two of their series against the Modesto Nuts, as they scored twice in the ninth inning and held on in the bottom half to win 3-2 over Modesto. The win snaps a four-game losing streak and evens the series at a game apiece.
  • Thursday, July 6 -  The Stockton Ports pitching staff is finding a groove during this six-game series with the Modesto Nuts. After holding the Nuts to just two runs a night ago, the Ports found a way to do even better on Thursday night, with Luis Carrasco and company spinning a shutout in a 5-0 Ports win. The victory is their second in a row over the Nuts, putting them up 2-1 in the series and tying them for second place in the California League North division.
  • Friday, July 7 -  Pitching and defense are the two staples of winning baseball teams, and right now, that embodies the Stockton Ports. They have been playing some of their best baseball of the season these last three games against the Modesto Nuts, and won another great game on Friday night with a final of 6-3. They’ve won three-in-a-row against the Nuts and now hold sole possession of second place in the California League North Division.
  • Saturday, July 8 - Entering this six-game series with the Modesto Nuts, the Stockton Ports had not won a game all season long when trailing after eight innings. After Saturday night’s 8-6 win against the Nuts, the Ports have done it twice in this series. Stockton trailed 6-1 at one point and came back to win 8-6, winning four-in-a-row in the series and securing a series win before the All-Star break. Their four consecutive wins also ties their longest winning streak of the season.
  • Sunday, July 9 -  Sunday night marked the end of the first half in the Major League Baseball season, and the Stockton Ports head into a break in the Minor League season after Sunday’s game in Modesto against the Nuts. After winning four-straight games, the Nuts were able to put an end to the hot streak for the Ports by holding them hitless with runners in scoring position, en route to a 3-1 series finale win. Stockton still wins the series 4-2, and heads into the hiatus with a 7-8 record in the second half.

TOP PERFORMERS

  • T.J. Schofield-Sam: After a slow first month of the season, Schofield-Sam has picked it up in all areas but especially on offense as the newly used utility fielder had himself quite the series in Modesto going 12-25 with a home run and four RBI, including five extra base hits.
  • Luis Carrasco - Carrasco had his best start of the season on Thursday night going six innings while only allowing two hits ad striking out seven.
  • Jose Escorche - Escorche provided a stable spark the entire week in Modesto going 8-26 with a team high five runs scored and four stolen bases.
