On Deck vs. Modesto Nuts Banner Island Ballpark Tuesday, August 8th - Sunday, August 13th // Times vary Following their six game series against the Rawhide, the Ports head back on home to take on the Modesto Nuts. The Ports won the previous series against the Nuts back in early July with the Ports taking four out of the six games against the Nuts.
PINEDA HEATING UP: After getting off to a slow start this season (.143, 0 XBH through 16 games), A’s No. 25 prospect (per MLB Pipe-line) Pedro Pineda has begun to swing the bat well. Since June 13 (24 games), Pineda is batting .299 with 3 2B, a triple and 2 HR while adding 8 SB. He has a .371 OBP and .425 SLG for an .796 OPS during that time.
RUN BRAYAN RUN: Brayan Buelvas has been one of the most effi-cient base-stealers in the California League this season. The Ports out-fielder (A’s No. 20 prospect per MLB Pipeline) is 23-for-25 in SB this season for a success rate of 92%. Buelvas was caught trying to steal home as part of a double steal on Saturday, the first time he has been caught since April 20 against Visalia, ending a stretch of 21 straight successful stolen base attempts.
JAMES GONZALEZ, KING OF THE “K”: Thanks in part to an improved curveball, Ports left-hander James Gonzalez has been racking up the strikeouts this season. His 92 K’s this season are second in the California League as well as all A’s minor league pitchers. Gonzalez is six strikeouts behind Michael Morales of the Modesto Nuts for the league lead and is three behind Joey Estes (Double-A Midland) for the A’s MiLB lead. The last time a Stockton Port finished in the top three in the Cal League in strikeouts was 2013 when Tanner Peters finished 2nd with 159. No Port has led the league in strikeouts since at least 1987.
TOP PROSPECT JOINS PORTS: Cuban right-hander Luis Morales was added to the Ports’ roster on Monday and will make his full-season debut on Saturday when he takes the ball in game five of the Ports’ series against the Lake Elsinore Storm. Morales was considered the top pitching prospect of the 2023 international signing period and signed with the A’s for $3 million in January. Across the DSL and ACL combined, Morales is 0-2 with a 3.15 ERA striking out 27 while walking just four in 20.0 IP. He has allowed 14 hits and opponents are batting just .189 against him.
IN SEARCH OF CLUTCH HITS: The Ports have been struggling over their last nine games with runners in scoring position. Stockton has left 84 runners on base during that time and are batting just .202 (21-for-104) with runners in scoring position entering Sunday’s game. For the season, the Ports are seventh in the league in hitting with runners in scoring position, batting .241, 10 points ahead of the Visalia Rawhide (.231).
BULLPEN STRUGGLES: The Ports’ relief unit has an ERA of 6.13, a WHIP of 1.63, and an opponents batting average of .275. Stockton’s ERA and batting average against are the highest marks in the league among bullpens, while their WHIP ranks 7th behind the Visalia Rawhide (1.67), who are one spot ahead of the Ports in bullpen ERA (5.77) and BAA (.272). Ports relievers have also allowed a league-high 54 home runs.
