Ports Snag Series Win Against San Jose, Welcome in Fresno Grizzlies to Continue 12-Game Homestand

Stockton had a come from behind victory Sunday afternoon to complete a series win against the First Half Northern Division California League Champions San Jose Giants, their second straight series win against San Jose. The Ports are now 8-4 against the Giants this season. Stockton will stay home this week to continue their 12-game homestand and welcome in the Fresno Grizzlies starting on Wednesday, June 28th with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM.

PREVIOUS GAMES AGAINST SAN JOSE GIANTS

  • Tuesday, June 20 - The Ports plated 17 runs in the series opener Tuesday night at Banner Island Ballpark against the recently clinched California League Northern Division Champions San Jose Giants in rout to a 17-5 win.
  • Wednesday, June 21 -  The Stockton Ports tied a season-long winning streak by capturing their fourth victory in a row on Tuesday night, besting the San Jose Giants at Banner Island Ballpark, 4-1.
  • Thursday, June 22 -  The Stockton Ports four-game winning streak came to a close on Thursday night at Banner Island Ballpark, falling 16-7 to the San Jose Giants.
  • Friday, June 23 -  The Stockton Ports jumped out to a six-run lead after two innings, cruising to a 7-3 victory over the San Jose Giants on Friday night at Banner Island Ballpark.
  • Saturday, June 24 - The Stockton Ports surrendered three home runs on Saturday night at Banner Island Ballpark as the San Jose Giants powered their way past the Ports, 7-1.
  • Sunday, June 25 - The Stockton Ports (27-42, 2-1) claimed a second series victory over the first half northern division champs on Sunday afternoon at Banner Island Ballpark, defeating the San Jose Giants (41-27, 1-2) by a score of 6-5.

TOP PERFORMERS

  • Brennan Milone: Milone has continued to show his bat to ball skills as the former Oregon Duck led the Ports this past week with an impressive .364 average while hitting two home runs and driving in seven for another strong series performance.
  • Colby Thomas - The 17th overall prospect for the A's, Thomas led the team in runs batted in this past week with another 10, good for first on the team with 46 RBI.
  • Pedro Santos - Santos was able to tab two saves this past week against the San Jose Giants, tossing 4.1 IP and not allowing a run with seven strikeouts.

Following their six-game series against the Grizzlies, the Ports head to Modesto and John Thurman Field to take on the Modesto Nuts. Stockton is 3-12 against Modesto this season.


Against Fresno Grizzlies

This will be the fourth time the the two teams have met this season. The Ports took the series the last time these two teams met down in Fresno and notching their first series win against the Grizzlies this season. The two are currently even with the season series at 9-9.


There have already been six games decided by one-run with the Ports going 4-2 in those games.


Fresno is coming off a series win against the Modesto Nuts and currently on a five game winning streak as they head into Stockton. They sit in first place currently with a game up on the Ports with the second half of the season underway. The second half started on Friday, June 23rd.


BATS HEATING UP AGAIN: It’s been an up-and-down ride for the Ports offensively so far this season, but over their last 12 games Stockton has been swinging the bats well. The Ports’ .278 team batting average since June 13 is third in the league, and Stockton also sits third in the league in doubles (21), hits (114) and OBP (.353), and are second in the circuit in runs scored (74). The Ports’ .755 OPS is good for third in the league.


SEASON BEGINS ANEW: On June 23, last Friday, the second half of the Cal League season began which resets every team’s record to 0-0. The winner of each half of the season receives a berth into the postseason. The Ports kicked off the second half of play with two wins to end their weekend series against the Giants, ultimately taking the series and starting off the new half with a 2-1 record.

  • The Grizzlies are 39-30, (3-0), good for first in the California League Northern Division Second half and coming off a series win against the Modesto Nuts.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

-TYLER SODERSTROM-

Former Port and A's top prospect Tyler Soderstrom has been lighting up the Pacific Coast League leaderboard in his first full season at Triple-A Las Vegas.


The Turlock, California native continues to display his power and maturity at the plate ranking top 10 in four of the major offensive categories. Soderstrom ranks fourth in home runs (16), sixth in extra base hits (33), and ninth in RBI (51) and total bases (130).


His season line currently sits at .251/.302/.829 with 16 home runs and 51 RBI. At the pace Soderstrom has been going since he's been in the A's system, we could see him in Oakland by the end of the season.

FORMER PORT WILLIAM GREGORY ST. PETER PASSES AWAY

The Stockton Ports are saddened to hear about the passing of former Port William Gregory St. Peter. St. Peter passed away on June 5, 2023. The Ports send condolences to St. Peter’s family and friends during this difficult time.


St. Peter played for the Ports in 1961 and 1962 where he threw a 4.55 ERA in those two seasons in 182 innings while striking out 123 batters.


William was a member of Lady of Peace Parish, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, boxing, and playing baseball. He was also proud to have played professional baseball for the Baltimore Orioles organization for four and a half years. Above all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


He is survived by his wife, children, and grand-children.
