On Deck vs. Fresno Grizzlies Banner Island Ballpark Wednesday, June 28 - Monday, July 3// Times vary Following their six-game series against the Giants, the Ports will stay home to continue their 12-game homestand and host the Fresno Grizzlies for the second time this season. The Ports are 9-9 against Fresno in the first 18 games played against each other.
Against San Jose Giants This will be the second the the two teams have met this season. The Ports got the best of the Giants the last time these two teams met with Stockton snagging their first series win against San Jose since June of 2019.
Stockton sits last in the California League with a 23-40 record and coming off a series split against the Lake Elsinore Storm where they took the final two games in the six-game set at The Diamond which included a win in the series finale 6-0.
San Jose makes their way into Stockton coming off of a series loss against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. Although the Giants lost the series, both teams would end up clinching their respective divisions for the California League First-Half Champions. The Giants have the most runs scored in the California League with 394 and hold the largest run differential in all of Single-A with a +77 accompanied with one of the top offenses in all of Single-A with a team best .267 batting average, .06 points higher than the second place Inland Empire 66ers.
The Giants have three hitters hitting over .300 and six hitting over .250. All nine of their regular starters have an OBP of at least .340 or higher and giving them a Single-A team-high .361 on-base percentage.
JUNE SWOON: The Ports have ridden a roller coaster from month to month when it comes to their win-loss record. Stockton went just 3-18 in April but followed that up with a May that saw them perform better than .500 at 14-12. However, the Ports have lost 11 of their 16 games in the month of June thus far. The Ports have the worst record in the month of June.
BLOWN OPPORTUNITIES: So far this season, the Ports’ bullpen has been inconsistent when it comes to holding leads. The Ports’ are 11- for-32 in save opportunities and their 21 blown saves is most in the league, seven more than the Lake Elsinore Storm who have 14. During their previous 12-game road trip, the Ports were just 1-for-6 in save opportunities. The Ports’ bullpen has an ERA of 6.84, a WHIP of 1.78, and an opponents batting average of .286. All three marks are highest in the league ahead of the Modesto Nuts (5.91; 1.65; .273)
STREAKING PORTS: Recently, a few Ports have been red-hot at the plate as Henry Bolte and Brennan Milone have put together hitting streaks of six games or greater. With an infield single in the series opener on Tuesday, Bolte ran his hitting streak to six games. During the streak, Bolte is 8-for-21 (.381) with a double, two triples and a home run. Milone extended his hitting streak to seven straight games with his second straight 3-for-5 performance on Friday. During his run, Milone is 12-for-30 (.400) with four doubles and a home run.
SWINGIN’ IT: Over their last 12 games, the Ports’ bats have been hot. During that stretch, Stockton has a .265 team batting average, the third-highest mark in the league. The Ports’ 23 doubles during that time is third most in the league and their six triples is tied for the second most in the circuit. The Ports tied their season high with 15 hits on Thursday night in Lake Elsinore, a mark they reached on April 16 in Fresno.
CLEAN BASEBALL: Over their last 20 games, the Ports have made a big improvement defensively. Since May 27, Stockton has committed just 14 errors, producing a fielding percentage of .978, which is the third-best mark in the league during that time. The Ports reached their defensive nadir after their game on May 21 when they committed a season-high seven errors against the Giants at Banner Island Ballpark. After that game, the Ports sported a league-low .951 fielding percentage having committed 71 errors in 39 games.
SEASON BEGINS ANEW NEXT WEEK: On June 23, next Thursday, the second half of the Cal League season begins which resets every team’s record to 0-0. The winner of each half of the season receives a berth into the postseason. The Ports kick off the second half of play with the back end of a six-game series against the first-half North Division champion San Jose Giants.
About the Giants - The Giants are 39-24, good for first in the California League Northern Division and coming off a series loss against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.
