@ Inland Empire 66ers

San Manuel Stadium

Tuesday June 6 - Sunday, June 11 // Times vary

Following their six-game series against the Nuts, the Ports go back on the road to start a 12-game road trip and face the Inland Empire 66ers for the first time this season.

Against Modesto Nuts

This will be the third matchup of the season between the Ports and the Nuts. Modesto came into Banner Island Ballpark for Opening Weekend and swept Stockton April 6th-April 8th and did the same at the end of April when the Ports traveled to Modesto. The Ports suffered four one-run losses, including three walk-off losses the last time these two met.

The Ports have yet to win a game against the Nuts so far in 2023, going 0-9 as they'll look to snap their 9-game losing streak against Modesto starting tonight with first pitch slated for 6:05 pm.

The Nuts are coming off a series loss against the San Jose Giants after dropping four of six against the first-place team. With the series loss, the Nuts are 8-18 in the month of May after starting strong in April with a 14-7 record.

Modesto is currently third in team batting average in the California League (.260) and second in on-base percentage (.360).

MAY TURNAROUND: After a dreadful April, the Ports have played much better baseball in the month of May. Since the calendar turned, the Ports are over .500 with a 13-11 record. Stockton went just 3-18 in April and lost 14 of the 15 games to end the month. Outside of that string of 15 games, the Ports are 15-15.

WARMER WEATHER BRINGS HOTTER BATS: Since the start of the season the Ports’ offense has been riding an up-and-down roller coaster, but Stockton’s bats have been more productive as a whole since the calendar turned to May. The Ports as a team are batting .248 through 24 games for the month of May as opposed to a .204 mark in 21 games in April. Stockton’s OBP and SLG are both significantly higher this month than they were last.

The Ports have a .347 OBP in May (.304 in April) and a .376 SLG as opposed to .305 last month. Over their last 13 games, the Ports are batting .265, good for fourth in the league during that stretch, and have scored 89 total runs (6.8 per game). Stockton also sports a .358 OBP, 24 2B and 13 HR during that time and have an .766 OPS. In the month of May, Stockton is averaging 6 runs per game as opposed to just 3.8 last month.

STREAKING PORTS: Recently, a couple Ports have been red-hot at the plate as Henry Bolte, Jose Escorche and Colby Thomas have all put together hitting streaks.

Bolte hit safely in 12 straight games, tying Thomas for the longest hitting streak for the Ports this season. Bolte was batting .360 during his streak with 4 2B, 2 HR and 17 RBIs. He owns an OPS of .981.

Escorche has put together a seven-game hitting streak, going 12-for-25 (.480) with 3 2B, a home run and 7 RBIs.

Thomas has hit in five straight games going 6-for-19 with 2 2B, a home run and an .845 OPS.

PORTS LOOK TO CONTROL RUNNING GAME: So far in 2023, Stockton’s opponents have had a lot of success as base stealers. The Ports have thrown out just 7 of 68 attempted base stealers. The seven would-be thieves is the lowest number in the Cal League, and the 60 SB allowed is the league’s highest number. The Ports’ opponents success rate of 89.7% is highest in the circuit. The Ports have caught two base-stealers this week against the Grizzlies. On Tuesday, Cooper Uhl nabbed Parker Kelly trying to steal second base for the Ports’ first caught stealing in May and the first since April 28.

About the Nuts

  • The Nuts are 22-23, good for third in the California League Northern Division and coming off a series loss against the first-place San Jose Giants.
  • Modesto is 9-0 against Stockton this season.
  • 9-12 on the road.
  • Gabriel Gonzalez leads the team with a .352 batting average, good for first in all the Cal League.
  • Modesto's starting rotation ERA is 4.66.
  • Josh Hood leads the team in RBI with 27.
